 Eular Thorne

            Eular Thorne, 106 years of age and a pioneer resident of Alpena, died Monday afternoon at the home of his son, Jackson, 2722 Gratiot, Port Huron, where he had resided the past 15 years. 

            Born Oct. 16, 1850 in London, England, He came to Goderich, Ont. With his mother and her family in 1857, a year after his father died.  He entered the United States at Port Huron and came to Alpena via the Str. Genesee Chief in 1866.  He settled in the Long Rapids area and spent most of his life there.  He was engaged in the lumbering industry and participated in many of the early river drives.

            He was married July 18, 1883 in Alpena to Mary Bartley Woods.  She died Dec. 12, 1914.

            He served three terms as Highway commissioner and two terms as treasurer of Long Rapids-twp.

            Besides his son, Jackson, he is survived by two other sons, Robert of Greeley and Milo of Long Rapids; two step-daughters, Mrs. Eugene Darveau of Grayling and Mrs. William Masters of Detroit; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

            The body is at the Bannan funeral home where service will be Thursday at 2 with interment in Long Rapids cemetery.
