Harlo E. Herron

 

Harlo E. Herron, 67, of 809 S. Third, longtime Alpena businessman and former Mayor of Alpena, died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 10) at Alpena Hospital, following an extended illness.  He had been hospitalized since Oct. 12.

 

Son of the late Mr. & Mrs.Fred Herron, he was born Nov. 10, 1898 in Wilson Township and came to Alpena 45 years ago.  Following his graduation from Ferris Institute, hw worked for Lee Hardware in Onaway and Rogers City and he continued with the firm after its sale to Gebhart-Morrow.  In 1933, he purchased the Lee Hardware part of the business, which he renamed Herron Farm Implement-co and located at 119 E. Chisholm.  After many years, he dissolved this business and opened a shoe mart in the building.  He sold the business a month ago due to ill health.

 

In 1951, following the death of Mayor James Copping, Mr. Herron was appointed to the Alpena Municipal Council and was elected Mayor at the next election in 1953.  He served in this capacity until 1963 – a decade of major municipal progress.

 

He was a member and deacon of the First Congregation Church, a past president of the Alpena Rotary Club, a past president of the Alpena Boys Club Board of Directors, a charter member of the Alpena Civic Orchestra, and a member of the Roundup Hunting Club. He lent his efforts to many civic affairs.

 

Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Meddaugh, whom he married Oct. 27, 1934; two children Myra and Paul at home; and two step-sisters, Mrs. John Heller of Rogers City and Mrs. Arthur Mosher of Toledo, O.

 

Mr. Herron’s body is at the Wachterhauser Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held at 2 Saturday.  The Rev. Robert M. Barksdale of the First Congregational Church will officiate.  Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
